How Westlake International School Brought Finnish-Style Coding to Malaysia

When Westlake International School in Kampar decided to take its digital education program to the next level, the team faced a big question:
How can a Malaysian school implement future skills like coding and AI — without in-house expertise or endless new resources?

That’s when they partnered with Code School Finland, through Finnish Education Solutions (FEDS), to introduce a practical and engaging coding curriculum designed for teachers and students alike.

A Vision for Future-Ready Learners

Westlake International School is a K–12 private institution with about 600 students, following the Cambridge Primary Curriculum.
The school has always placed strong emphasis on innovation, technology, and future skills — including robotics and programming modules — even at the primary level.

However, developing a complete digital skills program internally proved to be challenging.
Two teachers who joined the pilot had no previous programming experience, yet were eager to build something meaningful for their students.

The Turning Point

Before the collaboration, Westlake had been using Google’s Applied Digital Skills program. While informative, it didn’t inspire the level of creativity or engagement the teachers hoped for.

“Our students were not engaged — it was too passive for them,”
says Bry Ern.
“To implement a change like this, you need a lot of resources, which we didn’t have. It would have been very difficult to create this all by ourselves.”

Through FEDS, the school connected with Code School Finland, whose Teachease platform provided ready-made modules aligned with Finnish pedagogy — focusing on problem-solving, creativity, and hands-on digital projects.

From Doubts to Confidence

Naturally, the leadership team had some hesitation. Could a solution from Finland — a small company from halfway across the world — truly fit into a Malaysian learning environment?

“We wondered if something based on Finnish school philosophy would align with our own approach and student needs,”
Bry Ern admits.

Those doubts quickly faded once the teachers began their training.
The implementation turned out to be smoother than expected — even for teachers new to coding.
With guided support and well-structured materials, they were able to create two impressive student projects within months.

The Outcome

The collaboration turned out to be a hands-off process for management and an empowering one for teachers.
What began as a cautious experiment soon became a showcase of how Finnish education principles can blend naturally with Malaysian classrooms.

A Malaysian–Finnish Collaboration for Impact

Through this partnership, FEDS continues to bridge the gap between world-class educational innovation and local classroom realities — helping Malaysian schools embrace coding, creativity, and AI learning with confidence.

Westlake International School’s story proves that the right guidance, structure, and mindset can make digital transformation not only possible — but inspiring.
